Instructions to Install Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) 2.2.5

General

Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) 2.2.5 is Apple's implementation of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). It provides the runtime software needed to run Java applets.

If you are under Mac OS 8.x environment, you need to install the latest version of MRJ. (2.2.5 at the time of this release)

You don't need to install MRJ under Mac OS X environment since Mac OS X ships with built-in Java.

Installation process:

For Netscape 4.x users under Mac OS 9.x only:
Check if MRJ has already been installed on your computer first. See if the following directories exist on your hard drive:
System Folder\Extensions\MRJ Libraries\MRJLib

If the answer is yes, you already have MRJ installed. You probably need to install MRJ Plugin (NOT MRJ) to make the Equation Editor work.

If the answer is no, follow the instructions below to install MRJ 2.2.5.

For users of all supported browsers: (IE 5.x, Netscape 4.7x and Netscape 6.x)

1)Click here or Apple's MRJ site to download MRJ 2.2.5. If you are using Netscape, you might need to hold down the Option key on your keyboard while clicking on the link.

2) Some browsers will ask you where you want to save MRJ_2.2.5_Install.bin and others will place it by default, on the Desktop. If asked, you should save it on your Desktop.

3) Once the download has been completed, double-click the MRJ_2.2.5_Install.bin and your browser should automatically unstuff it as files MRJ_2.2.5_Install.bin.1, MRJ_2.2.5_Install.smi.sit and MRJ_2.2.5_Install.smi on your Desktop.

NOTE: You might get an error message like this: "The Shrink Wrap engine has reported an error / error = 60". Ignore the error, click "OK" and continue the following steps.

4) Double-click the file MRJ 2.2.5.smi and it will be unstuffed as folder MRJ Install.

5) Double-click the folder MRJ Install and locate the file MRJ Installer. Double-click this file and follow the installation instructions. You might need to quit your browser and all other running programs before the installation.
